helpful content update (HCU)
Google ranking-algorithm update launched in August 2022 (refined multiple times since) that classifies content as "people-first" vs "search-engine-first" via an ML signal applied site-wide. Sites flagged as predominantly search-engine-first see meaningful demotion across all queries; the classifier targets specific patterns including thin content, repetitive structure, and lack of personal-experience signal.
